Student Machine Shop

Apr 30, 2023Apr 30, 2023

The Mechanical Engineering Student Access Machine Shop provides engineering students with a well-equipped and safe working environment where they can design and manufacture their projects for engineering classes, research, and extracurricular team competition(s).

Located in 1166 Etcheverry Hall, the student shop provides hands-on experience through safety training, machine operation instruction, and technical guidance as they complete various projects during their course curriculum. It serves engineering students from the Mechanical Engineering (ME), Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), Nuclear Engineering (NE), and Bioengineering (BioE) Departments, seeking to balance and complement the strong theoretical education here at UC Berkeley. It also supports various engineering team competitions, such as Formula SAE, CalSol (solar powered), Super Mileage Vehicle, Human Powered Vehicle, rocket teams, and CEE Bridge Building teams.

The shop staff, consisting of Scott McCormick, Eric Dukatz, Katherine Hom, Alex Jordan, Dennis Lee, and Jeff Higginbotham, are available for consulting and manufacturing assistance for various class projects. Between them, they have many years of practical work experience in industry and manufacturing.

Upon completion of a concentrated technical training program, students are allowed to utilize the shop facility. Here, they design and manufacture their engineering projects supporting their engineering class work, research, and team competition groups. The machine tools available for student operation include engine lathes, vertical milling machines, drill presses, bench top grinders, belt sanders, and band saws. Additional staff-operated equipment is used in teaching manufacturing processes, including an OMAX Water Jet, a Mori Seiki CNC Lathe, several Haas Vertical Machining Centers, a Markforged X7 3D Printer, several Stratasys F170 3D Printers, and a Hexagon Coordinate Measuring Machine. Work requests may be submitted for these machines, outlined in https://me.berkeley.edu/resources/student-machine-shop/services-provided/.

To acquire access to the facility, training requests must be sent at the beginning of the semester through the website at https://me.berkeley.edu/resources/student-machine-shop/shop-training/. Questions regarding training can be sent to our email at [email protected].
