Fine engravings on anything from an aircraft's wing parts to the finest of jewellery, cutlery or the likes means there is a constant need to either put details on things or create impressions that convey a certain idea or for that matter information. And what better way to get it done than in the most time-tested CNC way of engraving? Speaking of CNC engraving, there can't be a better way to do it than with the use of machines from N-Gravetek of Nashik in the state of Maharashtra.

Bhavnagar-based Makwana Engineering Works manufactures a wide range of Make in India Milling Machines for the local and international market. Nearing its Golden Jubilee, Makwana Engineering produces 400 machines every month. In an exclusive interaction with Machine Maker, Jayesh Makwana talks about his experience at IMTEX and how visitors have a hard time believing that these machines were made in India. He also talks about the challenges faced in selling high-quality products in the Indian market and encourages manufacturers to upgrade themselves. Jayesh is set to provide Indian industries with the best quality machines which go beyond global expectations.

Drilling being a basic and very pertinent need in the field of machining and metalworking, Makwana Engineering Works’ range of pillar drilling machines has the capacity to drill from 20mm to 40mm with its customers worldwide having a choice of procuring light, medium or heavy-duty machines, besides custom-built special purpose machines. The best part about their machines is the interchangeability of parts that reduces costs while keeping machines operational for the longest of time. Today, close to twenty-thousand (20000) machines from the Makwana Engineering Works’ predominantly pillar drilling machines find pride of place in machining plants all over the world. In India, their clients include prominent names like Tata and Reliance.

Great products being an outcome of great plants and factories, Makwana Engineering Works’ plant in Gujarat has a highly developed infrastructure including a modern communication system, sufficient power supply and water facilities that besides resulting in the making of the best machines, also keep their production staff and personnel extremely happy and satisfied at all times. The company also has all the required mother machines and adequate measuring devices besides trained and skilled personnel for all its departments which ensures high productivity and sound management practices. Part of the reason their products are of such high quality is to do with the necessary training that they impart to their employees keeping every now and then in view customers requirements.

Makwana Engineering Works offers all types of Pillar and Radial Drilling Machines, SPM as per customers requirements and High precision heavy-duty machines. Jayesh Makwana is the 3rd Generation Owner, who is handling the company. He looks after Sales and Marketing and is elated about their most important product the ‘Pillar Drill Machine’. that they have successfully developed to drill from 1 mm to 80 mm depth. Within just the Pillar Drill Machine, they have close to 20 different models.

Elaborating on their pain points, Jayesh says that there are certain electronic and designing parts that are very hard to find in India. That, and better quality parts needed for critical operations that one finds only in imported machines make things difficult for an Indian supplier. That said, despite these hurdles, Jayesh continues to make these products in India that conform to global quality standards saw them successfully develop a High-Speed Drilling machine that matches the standards of German companies, at half their prices!

He elaborates ruefully that "Indian manufacturers fail to understand the advantages of quality". Indian manufacturers concentrate a lot on pricing and use local products compromising the quality of the machinery.

The only aim of ‘Make in India’ he says is to make users buy products made in India and motivate them to produce products in India itself. This can eliminate imports and consequent duties while increasing employment within the country. There was a time when sellers used to import from global companies and sell, including to the Indian government but now whenever a tender is issued, ‘Make in India’ products get the first priority. Today most manufacturers want Indian-made high-quality machines, which can be counted as a success of this campaign. He adds that "If we keep importing, no one will work on new technology in India" talking about how ‘Make in India’ has revolutionized Indian industries.

India's impression in the global market in manufacturing is quite good. At IMTEX Bangalore 2022, their products were so good and so advanced that visitors had a hard time believing that they were made in India! With excellent design and quality, they have managed to match and go beyond the global standards of industries. "We don't want Indian customers to import machinery," says Jayesh talking about India in the global market. He says that every manufacturer should make good quality products so that no one has to reach out for global products.

Makwana Engineering Works remains quality conscious and strives for continual improvement towards which it has adopted quality management systems. Every component passes through stringent quality control measures to ensure consistency in the quality and interchangeability of parts. For its part, the company is known for being unyielding when it comes to accuracy and performance.
